We can list among the Harlem Renaissance's greatest accomplishments a make-over for African_America's image. The PR component of the celebrated #movement was one of the most important because it came at a time when #African_Americans as a people and the United States as a country were still negotiating the transition from #slavery, to post #CivilWar #Reconstruction, to the demands of #WorldWar and the #Industrial_Age.

However (and it's a big however) so far there seems to be no such thing as a permanent fix when it comes to how the world, including #African_Americans themselves, look at #Black_Men. So "Discovering 'The Many Ways of Looking at a Black Man' in 2017" makes a #goodread for prompting considerations of an intriguing enduring #challenge:

The theme of #social & #political #progress during the #HarlemRenaissance was not only applicable to #AfricanAmericans. It was important to #America as a whole.

There were many well-documented ways different segments of #society tried to stop that progress. One of them was by promoting #xenophobia and #racial_bias in countries outside the United States. A lot of people believe we are seeing such attempts again in the 21st century through the aggressive spread of #altright #media.

Adversity was part of what inspired #leadership & #creative #genius as the #Harlem_Renaissance unfolded. Will it do the same in the #Year2017?

His is not the most publicized #biography in the world but William Pleasant Jr. was an African-American #artist born during the #HarlemRenaissance. He was from the #South but later studied in the #North and like the late #LutherEVann returned to his #hometown of #Savannah #Georgia to practice his craft and help enrich his #community.

Although #historians have tended to give Mr. Pleasant less attention than he is probably due, it just so happens that several of his children became artists as well and currently developing a #film #documentary about their father’s life and #legacy:

The prolific creativity of the Harlem Renaissance is something that has never been in dispute. The same cannot be said for the strategies and specific historical developments that made it happen. That it was a triumph of creative genius over destructive violence is always worth celebrating:
