A new op-ed in the LA times describes a woman who's child contracted measles and got a rare complication (encephalitis, with an incidence of 0.1% according to the article). She goes on to blame people who do not vaccinate for measles.

Encephalitis is an awful disease. However, it turns out the most common cause of encephalitis in the world is not measles, rather it's the herpes simplex virus! Herpes simplex is the same virus that causes cold sores. To read more about this, check out our blog...

New study claims to establish that wearing a bra has no impact on breast cancer.

According to a WebMD interview, Dr. Dimitrios Trichopoulos, a professor of cancer prevention at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston stated that the study is solid and that "[t]his study tells the obvious, the logical, that it is safe to wear a bra," he said.

This study was supposed to be in response to a 1991 study that found about twice the risk of breast cancer for women wearing bras and that cup size also correlated more significantly (larger the cup size, the higher the risk) to breast cancer.

Despite Dr. Trichopoulos's opinion that the study is solid, it was a poorly designed study to counter the 1991 study because the current study looked at POST-menopausal women and the 1991 study looked at PRE-menopausal women. These are completely different populations with completely different risk factors. We cannot fathom why the authors changed the inclusion criteria so dramatically as it makes the current study inapplicable to the patient population studied by the 1991 study.

While we are not suggesting that we feel bra's cause cancer, we don't know and we certainly want our readers to know that this new study will have no relevance to you if you are premenopausal. In other words, if you were concerned about the 1991 study and not wearing a bra (purportedly cutting your breast cancer risk in half), then this current study should not alter your habits.

Recalls have been issued for some Trader Joe's and Whole Foods nut butters. Possible salmonella contamination. Best to DIY and make your own with a food processor!

Antibacterial soaps are beginning to raise alarms. Possible fetal toxicity of some of the components. Earlier animal studies have shown problems such as interference with thyroid function. Proper thyroid function is crucial for proper brain and nervous system development. Low thyroid in pregnancy is strongly associated with mental deficits in offspring. Our recommendation has been, and continues to be, to avoid any antibacterial soaps (by the way, this goes for the chemical hand sanitizers as well, we recommend avoiding them where possible.

Black cumin seed oil (Nigella Sativa) oil has antitumor effects against lung cancer (specifically lung adenocarcinoma...largely due to smoking). Black cumin seeds are often used in curries and should be cooked in fat to extract the important chemicals. For more information about this and a number of other nutrients, fruit and vegetables that can inhibit lung cancer, read our blog post here:
